How to fix "It looks like we don't support this file format" in Photos, Preview, Photoshop

It looks like we don't support this file format.

What this error means

Windows Photos could not decode the image — either it is cut off, has junk at the start, or is really another format such as HEIC or WebP.

Why it happens

  • Photo copied from an SD card or phone that disconnected
  • An iPhone HEIC photo renamed to .jpg
  • Recovered by undelete software with the wrong start position

How to fix it

  1. Open it in a web browser — browsers show partial JPEGs
  2. Run the free check here: if it is HEIC or WebP we tell you, free, and our converters change it

About JPEG photo files

A JPEG starts with a header (size, colour tables) and then compressed picture data written top to bottom. If the file is cut short, the top of the photo is still there; viewers just refuse to show it because the end marker is missing.
