How to fix "Word found unreadable content in document.docx" in Microsoft Word

Word found unreadable content in document.docx. Do you want to recover the contents of this document?

What this error means

Word opened the package but one of the XML parts inside is broken — usually cut off part-way, or pointing to an image or style that is missing.

Why it happens

  • The file was saved while the disk was full or the laptop lost power
  • An email or cloud sync cut the file short
  • An add-in or converter wrote invalid XML

How to fix it

  1. Click Yes — Word's own recovery sometimes works, but often drops formatting or whole sections
  2. If the result is missing text, upload the original (not the recovered copy) here: we repair the XML directly instead of skipping it
  3. Check File › Info › Manage Document › Recover Unsaved Documents for an AutoRecover copy

About Word document files

A .docx file is really a ZIP folder of XML files: the text lives in word/document.xml, with styles, images and settings stored beside it. Most "corrupted" Word files are a damaged ZIP index or one broken XML part — the text itself is usually still there.
